What the name means
Sermorelin is a peptide, which means a short chain of protein building blocks.
It is made in a lab to act like part of growth hormone-releasing hormone, the body’s signal to release growth hormone.
Its target is the pituitary gland, a small gland beneath the brain that can release growth hormone.
The drug name identifies the signal being used. It does not answer why it is being offered to you.
How it differs from growth hormone
Sermorelin prompts the body to release its own growth hormone; it does not supply growth hormone itself.
The US drug agency, FDA (Food and Drug Administration), says that medicines triggering growth hormone release cannot work when the body makes none.
FDA made that statement while reviewing ipamorelin and CJC-1295, other medicines that trigger growth hormone release. It was not a test of sermorelin in adults.
Ask the doctor: “Can my body still make growth hormone, and what do my test results tell you?”
How you take it matters
The childhood and older-adult studies discussed here gave the medicine by injection.
The research read for this guide does not establish how swallowed, under-the-tongue or skin-applied sermorelin performs.
Ask how you would take the medicine and which study tested that way of taking it. A study of shots does not answer a question about swallowing it or applying it to the skin.
Check what the studies testedTurn a drug name into a care question
- What health concern is this meant to address?
- What findings point to that concern?
- Why choose this approach?
- How will a useful result be judged?
A plain answer names the concern and the proposed goal. Ask for that explanation before getting lost in hormone terms.
The point to carry forward.
Ask what health problem the medicine would treat, and which study supports the way you would take it.

The basic description has limits
Sermorelin needs a gland that can still make growth hormone. FDA’s statement about a body making none applies to this drug group; it does not show that sermorelin will help a particular adult.
Ask what your examination and test results say about whether this treatment could help you.
