Gather the information for the visit
- Write down the concern and when you first noticed it.
- List medicines and supplements you currently take.
- Have relevant test results or past records available.
- Record the state where you will be located during the visit.
- Choose the questions you want answered before the call ends.
Keep the notes brief. Plain descriptions of symptoms and goals are enough to start the discussion.
What an assessment needs to allow
As of September 2026, states vary in whether they allow an initial online assessment by video, phone or a form-based exchange.
The national federation of state medical boards says treatment cannot be based solely on a fixed questionnaire.
That is board guidance, while each state’s rules are the enforceable ones.
Ask how the clinician can follow up on your answers. Ask how you can raise a question that the intake form did not cover.
When more information is needed
Medical-board guidance requires the clinician to arrange necessary testing or make a referral when the assessment calls for those steps.
The same guidance calls for in-person care when the concern needs an exam or procedure that cannot be done remotely.
Ask who orders any tests, where the results go and when they will be discussed. An unexplained test list is a reason to ask for its purpose.
Make sure you can explain the plan
- What concern are we addressing?
- What are the next steps and why?
- What needs checking before a decision?
- How do I reach the clinician after this visit?
- What does follow-up cost?
If treatment is proposed, ask what would lead to changing or ending the plan. Ask for written answers to any points left unclear.

A useful visit leaves you able to name the concern, the next steps and the person responsible for later questions.

The visit guidance is conditional
The federation’s telehealth policy is a model for medical boards; it does not create a single national rule for online assessments.
Ask the service how its visit format meets the rules where you will be.
